Often the source of frustration in our work, constraints hold the keys to unlock ideas.

The saying, "Think outside the box" has its value. There are times when we need to expand our thinking beyond our current limitations. However, we often overlook the fact that constraints can actually spark creativity.

Amy Blaschka, a writer for FORBES, explains this concept. “Imagine being given the task of creating something new with unlimited options. You can use any material, color, size, or shape that you desire. It sounds incredible, but this type of creative freedom can be overwhelming.”

Constraints can feel restrictive and severely limiting to our work, but constraints can give birth to some of our best creative innovations. Creative leaders and authors Adam Morgan and Mark Barden argue that we can even make constraints beautiful.

How this Session on Constraints Works

01

Define Our Limitations

Working from a real project you bring with you, we begin by clearly naming the constraints shaping your challenge.

02

Learn a New Tool

You’ll learn how to use Propelling Questions—a framework that combines bold ambition with a meaningful constraint to create clarity.

03

Expose the Greatest Constraint

Of all the constraints we name, the greatest often lives within us. Together, we surface and name our insecurities.
